Victoria Azarenka hires Michael Joyce as new coach

MINSK, 13 March (BelTA) – Belarus number one tennis player Victoria Azarenka has added American coach Michael Joyce to her team. The player shared the news with her followers in the social networks, BelTA has learned.

44-year-old Michael Joyce is a former ATP player. Since retiring from professional tennis, he coached former number one Maria Sharapova between 2005-2011. Under his tutelage, she won more than ten WTA tournaments, including US Open 2006 and Australian Open 2008.

Victoria Azarenka is currently 17th in the WTA rankings. In December 2016 she gave birth to her baby boy and plans to be back on court at the US Open which kicks off in New York on 28 August.

Belarusian Max Mirnyi and Treat Huey of the Philippines are taking part in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells this week. The Belarusian-Filipino duo saw off Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov and Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-4, 3-6, 10-3 in the opener to set a match against the Brazilian-UK duet of Bruno Soares and Jonathan Marray.
