MINSK, 28 December (BelTA) - Portuguese forward of FC Real Madrid Cristiano Ronaldo was named the best European athlete of 2016 by European news agencies, the Belarusian News Agency BelTA among them.
27 European media agencies have voted the Real Madrid striker as their sportsperson of the year. This is the first time that a football player has been awarded this accolade in 59 years since the award was instituted. In 2016 Ronaldo won the UEFA Champions League, Euro 2016, and 2016 Ballon d'Or award.
Cristiano Ronaldo is followed by British Andy Murray (ATP No. 1) and three-time Rio Olympic champion in swimming Katinka Hosszu of Hungary.
