Prokopenko: 2018 UIPM WC in Mexico is a historic milestone for Belarus

MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) – The 2018 UIPM World Championship in Mexico has become a historic milestone for Belarusian modern pentathlon, two-time gold medalist Anastasia Prokopenko told BelTA.

Anastasia Prokopenko and Irina Prosentsova clinched gold in the women's relay. Later Anastasia Prokopenko finished atop in the individual event.

“The championship was difficult for many athletes. Mexico lies at the altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level, and for many athletes such conditions are a complex test. Ahead of the world's sport forum the Belarusian team held a training camp in the mountains in Italy and, thus, was well prepared. Despite it all, Tatiana Khaldoba, who performed together with me in the individual event, had difficulties with breathing. I was lucky to avoid any problems of the kind and showed good results. I think that two gold medals that we won in such a tough competition is a historic achievement for the Belarusian pentathlon,” said Anastasia Prokopenko.

During the 2018 UIPM World Championships in Mexico City, the Belarusian pentathlete was awarded a bronze medal of the Olympic Games in Beijing. The bronze winner Victoria Tereshchuk of Ukraine re-tested positively for anabolic steroid turinabol. According to the decision of the International Olympic Committee, the medal was given to Anastasia Prokopenko. “Every award is important for me, especially the one from the 2008 Olympics. Ten years ago I went to Beijing with pneumonia and was able to finish fourth. Years have passed and you see how everything turned out,” the athlete said.

Anastasia Prokopenko, a mother of two, stressed that her results would be impossible without the support of her family.

The last two seasons have become the best ever for the Belarusian pentathlete. Anastasia Prokopenko won gold medals at the 2017 European Modern Pentathlon Championships in Belarus and the 2018 UIPM World Championships in Mexico.
