MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – Diego Maradona, the newly-minted chairman of FC Dynamo Brest will help popularize football in Belarus, Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk said in an interview with Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA informs.
“Today many people believe that Diego Maradona will bring new things in the Belarusian football. I do not think he is going to overhaul the whole system. However, inviting the best football player of the 20th century was a smart decision as he will be associated with Brest. The more such specialists we have in football, the more popular this sport will become,” Sergei Kovalchuk said.
The minister also commented on Darya Domracheva's possible retirement. “I talked to Dasha. She has done a lot for the biathlon in the world. She has a child who needs a lot of attention and time. She has a winning spirit and will not agree to runner-up positions. In any way it will be her choice. We hope that Dasha will stay as part of the national team,” Sergei Kovalchuk said.More about Sport
