Opinion: Belarus is becoming a mecca for major sporting events

MINSK, 2 August (BelTA) - Belarus is becoming a mecca for major sporting events, Belarus First Deputy Sport and Tourism Minister Vyacheslav Durnov said at an event in the ministry on 2 August, BelTA has learned.

Chairman of the Belarusian Modern Pentathlon Federation Mikhail Prokopenko said that after the Modern Pentathlon European Championships the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) suggested holding the Modern Pentathlon World University Championships in Minsk in 2019. “Recently, our country has hosted many international tournaments. The events have been organized at a high level. This fact was noted by foreign specialists, athletes and officials. Belarus is becoming a mecca for major sporting events. The bar has been raised high, and we should keep it that way,” Vyacheslav Durnov said.

At the recent Modern Pentathlon European Championships, Belarusian athletes won two medals. Anastasia Prokopenko won the individual, Tatiana Khaldoba and Yekaterina Orel won the bronze medal in the relay. The championships was a rehearsal ahead of the season's main event - the World Championships in Cairo on 21-29 August.
