MINSK, 12 August (BelTA) – After a 71-74 defeat from Turkey on 11 August the Belarusian women's basketball team lost their chances to compete for Rio Olympics medals, BelTA has learned.
In another Group A encounter France ended Brazil's chances of reaching the quarterfinals of the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament by handing the hosts their fourth loss in as many games, 74-64. Celebrating the same success earlier was Australia that later took a 92-86 win over Japan.
Group A standings are as follows: France – 7 points (four games played), Australia – 6 (3), Turkey – 6 (4), Japan – 5 (3), Belarus – 5 (4), Brazil – 4 (4).
On the final day, 13 August, Belarus will face Australia, Japan will take on France and Turkey will go against Brazil.
Four best teams from each group advance to the playoff round. Quarterfinals are scheduled for 16 August. Semifinals will take place on 18 August, with medal games due on 20 August.
