Olympics 2016: Belarus' Ibragim Saidov wins wrestling bronze

MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – Ibragim Saidov of Belarus won the Olympic men's -125kg freestyle wrestling bronze in Rio, BelTA has learned.

Dagestan-born athlete beat Armenia's Levan Berianidze in the bronze-medal bout.

Earlier, Ibragim Saidov saw off Kazakhstan's Daulet Shabanbay 7-0 in the round of last 16. In the quarterfinal the Belarusian lost to reigning world champion Taha Akgul of Turkey 0-11. The Turkish athlete progressed to the final and allowed Ibragim Saidov to go through repechage.

Taha Akgul won Turkey's first gold of the Rio Olympics by beating Iran's Komeil Ghasemi. The other bronze was claimed by Georgian Geno Petriashvili.

In Rio Belarus has won three Olympic wrestling medals for the first time since 1996. Apart from Ibragim Saidov, medals were brought to Belarus by Greco-Roman wrestler Javid Hamzatov (-85kg bronze) and Maria Mamoshuk (-63kg silver).

Ibragim Saidov's bronze became Belarus' ninth medal at the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio.
