Olga Korbut's Olympic medals fetch over $200,000 at auction

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) –The Olympic medals of gymnast Olga Korbut fetched over $200,000 at an auction in the USA, BelTA has learned.

Olga Korbut, a many-time Olympic and world champion, put her numerous medals up for an auction. Predictably, the most expensive items were Korbut's team gold from the 1972 Munich Olympics, which went for $66,000, her team gold from the 1976 Montreal Games sold for $57,600, and her 1972 floor exercise gold sold for $52,800.

Korbut's gymnastics jacket went under the hammer for $3,000. The Sports Illustrated magazine, featuring Olga Korbut on the cover and signed by the gymnast, went for $49 to one of her fans.

All these memorabilia raised slightly over $230,000. 20% of the sum will go to the auction organizers, while Olga Korbut will get $183,300. 26 other items are still on sale.

Olga Korbut was born in Grodno on 16 May 1955. Coached by Renald Knysh, the talented Belarusian gymnast achieved stunning results, became a four-time Olympic champion and a three-time world champion. The Korbut flip, an extremely difficult gymnastics skill, was named after the athlete. The groundbreaking 1972 Munich performance by Korbut resulted in the tours over the USA and launched the gymnastics boom in the country. Since 1991, Olga Korbut has been living in the USA.
