Mirnyi knocked out of Madrid Open

MINSK, 6 May (BelTA) – Max Mirnyi of Belarus has completed his performance at the Madrid Open in Spain, BelTA has learned.

In the round of last 16 the Belarusian and his partner Treat Huey of the Philippines lost to the U.S.-Canadian tandem of Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil in a hard battle 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 4-10. In the opener the Belarusian-Filipino duo beat Daniel Nestor of Canada and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4.

Belarus number one Victoria Azarenka, ranked 5th in the world, pulled out from the tournament due to a back injury on 4 May. Earlier, Victoria Azarenka beat Laura Robson of the UK (World No.426) 6-4, 6-2 and saw off World No.49 Alize Cornet of France 6-3, 6-2. In the third round the Belarusian could not play against 130th-ranked American Louisa Chirico who beat Darya Gavrilova of Australia in the quarterfinal. On 6 May the American player is to face Slovak Dominika Cibulkova (World No.38). In another semifinal seventh-seeded Simona Halep of Romania will take on Australia's Samantha Stosur (World No.23).

The women's clay-court tournament in the Spanish capital will complete on 7 May. The men's event will finish on 8 May.
