Minsk to host World Cadet U8, U10, U12 Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2018

MINSK, 18 June (BelTA) – Minsk will play host to the second World Cadet U8, U10, U12 Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2018 on 22-24 June, BelTA learned from the press service of the Sport and Tourism Ministry.

Some 780 young athletes from 27 countries have already applied for the event. The first matches of 1-4 rounds will be played on 22 June. A year earlier, Minsk hosted the first world championship among boys and girls. Competing in the tournament were more than 600 boys and girls from 24 countries.

In 2017 young Belarusian athletes won 6 medals: 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze, finishing second in the unofficial team standings. Russia placed first (4, 3, 3), Vietnam third (2, 3, 4).

Simultaneously with the world championships the Belarusian Chess Federation will organize the open international rapid chess tournament in memory of the legendary Belarusian grandmaster Viktor Kupreichik.

Over a hundred participants from seven countries, among which 13 grandmasters, have applied for this tournament.

The organizers of the World Cadet U8, U10, U12 Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2018 are the Sport and Tourism Ministry, the National Olympic Committee of Belarus, Minsk City Hall, the President's Sports Club and the Belarusian Chess Federation.
