Minsk to host 2018 FIBA Under-17 Women's Basketball World Cup

MINSK, 3 May (BelTA) – Belarus will host the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Women's Basketball World Cup thanks to close cooperation with the FIBA, Executive Director of the Belarusian Basketball Federation Oleg Kondratyuk told the media on 3 May, BelTA has learned.

The decision to hold the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Women's Basketball World Cup in Belarus in 2018 was made at the FIBA Congress in Hong Kong on 3 May. The tournament is scheduled to run from 30 June to 8 July 2018.

“We did a good job hosting the 3x3 U18 European Championship in 2015, which gave us reason to hope for hosting other major FIBA tournaments. We are ready to hold competitions of any level. For the upcoming world cup we are considering several modern sports facilities in Minsk such as Chizhovka Arena, Falcon club, the sport palace Uruchie. Alexander Shimkoviak will be coaching the Belarusian team ahead of the worlds. In 2017 the team will take part in the European Youth Olympic Festival, the U-16 European Championship. In the future, players from this team will make to the national team,” Oleg Kondratyuk said.

He also noted that close cooperation with FIBA gives reason to hope for their support with the organization of competitions. For example, the FIBA will provide technical and organizational support for the 3x3 basketball tournament during the Second European Games in Minsk in 2019.
