Marina Lobach rhythmic gymnastics tournament to feature record number of athletes

MINSK, 23 March (BelTA) – A record number of athletes is expected to take part in the 15th edition of the international rhythmic gymnastics tournament for the prizes of Olympic champion Marina Lobach, the Belarusian outstanding athlete told a press conference, BelTA has learned.

The competitions will take place at the Minsk Palace of Sports on 25-26 March. Athletes of different age groups (born in 2001-2008) will compete for medals. “The format of the tournament has changed a little, and the number of participants has increased. In fact, many athletes that are expected to take part in the competitions on 25-26 March will go through selection and start preparations for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo,” Marina Lobach said.

A total of 145 athletes will take part in the tournament. Athletes from the Czech Republic will participate in the competitions for the first time. The team of Ukraine is coming back to Minsk following a brief hiatus.

Belarusians showed their best at the previous competitions, with Alina Gornosko and Yulia Isachenko claiming first places in individual routines. Yulia Isachenko also won the all-around event.

Apart from the main trophy, a statuette, participants will be presented with various awards. The Presidential Sports Club will give presents to all the participants, coaches, and judges and also valuable prizes for the winners.

The tournament for the prizes of Marina Lobach will be the main rehearsal ahead of the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships which is due in Budapest in late May 2017.
