KamAZ were first to congratulate Belarus' MAZ on 2nd place at Dakar Rally

MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) – Russia's KamAZ racers were the first to congratulate MAZ-SPORTavto team on the second place at Dakar, head of the Belarusian team Sergei Vyazovich told a press conference on 26 January, BelTA informs.

“There were many MAZ supporters among Dakar participants. We were rivals with KamAZ on track but we supported each other off-track. KamAZ was the first to congratulate us on our second place,” Sergei Vyazovich said. “Many leaders were hoping to attack and break away during the first part of the marathon in Peru but we did not let them far off. We did everything right at Stage 11, the toughest one this year. When our truck tipped over, we thought that was the end of the race for us but we managed to lift it back onto its wheels,” the racers added.

Three Belarusian crews made it to the finish line of the 2018 Dakar Rally. The crew led by Sergei Vyazovich was second overall in the truck category. MAZ racers Alexander Vasilevsky and Aleksei Vishnevsky were 13th and 14th, respectively.

The 2018 Dakar edition was the seventh for the Belarusian team. The owner of MAZ-SPORTavto is Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ trademark), the technical partner is velcom. This year, Dakar Rally was running through Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. The race featured 3,500 kilometers of high-speed sections, with most of the route running in the highlands.
