Irina Kurochkina wins European U23 Wrestling Championship gold

MINSK, 31 March (BelTA) - Irina Kurochkina of Belarus has claimed the -55kg gold at the 2017 European U23 Wrestling Championship in Szombathely, Hungary, BelTA has learned.

Irina Kurochkina had to go through the qualifying round where she routed Azerbaijan's Solmaz Hashimzade 10-0. In the quarterfinal the Belarusian was unstoppable to beat Bulgaria's Bilyana Zhivkova Dudova 10-0. Then, Irina Kurochkina claimed a 9-2 victory over Ramona Galambos of Hungary in the semifinal. A number of points helped the Belarusian secure the 5-1 victory over the Turkish athlete.

Earlier, the Belarusian won silver medals at the 2015 European U23 Championship in Walbrzych, Poland and the 2016 European Wrestling Championships in Riga.

Nadezhda Dragynova added a -60kg bronze medal to Belarus' medal haul at the 2017 European U23 Wrestling Championship in Szombathely. Freestyle wrestler Vitaly Pesnyak clinched the 125kg silver.
