Ice Stock Sport Cup in Brest to bring together teams from four countries

BREST, 29 July (BelTA) – On 30 July, the Belarusian city of Brest will play host to the Eastern Europe Ice Stock Sport Cup, BelTA learned from Vladimir Chernov, the head of the Belarusian Ice Stock Sport Federation.

Brest City Hall is one of the organizers of the sports tournament. Brest will play host to the international competition for the second time. The championship is timed to coincide with Brest City Day. Fourteen teams from Belarus, Russia, Poland and Lithuania will compete in the tournament. The list of participants features ice stock sport amateurs from Brest, Grodno, Moscow and Lazdijai. Seven venues will host the events of the championship.

Together with Brest residents, the athletes will celebrate the 997th founding anniversary of the city. The celebration program includes a colorful carnival and concerts with the participation of Belarusian and foreign performers. The festivities will culminate with a dazzling fireworks show. On 31 July, the athletes will set off for Terespol, Poland to take part in another ice stock sport competition.

Ice stock sport, also known as Bavarian Curling, is traditionally played on ice, though in summer some events are also held on a special surface. Competitors slide the ice stocks over an ice surface, either aiming for a target, or to cover the longest distance. There are several disciplines including teams, target shooting and distance shooting. This sport has been practiced in Brest since 2003 and has already gained a strong foothold.
