Group of Belarusian athletes arrives in South Korea for Winter Olympics

MINSK, 2 February (BelTA) – Belarusian cross-country and alpine skiers, short track and figure skaters have arrived in South Korea, BelTA learned from the press service of Belarus' National Olympic Committee.

“The Olympians were accredited and went to the Olympic village,” the NOC said.

Figure skaters Marina Zuyeva, Ignat Golovatyuk, Ksenia Sadovskaya, Tatyana Mikhailova, and Vitaly Mikhailov, and Belarus' sole short track skater Maksim Sergeyev will be living and preparing for the competitions in the coastal cluster in Gangneung. The cross-country and alpine skiers will settle in the mountain cluster in Pyeongchang.

The Belarusian biathlon team are already in South Korea. The biathletes had a training on 2 February. On 8 February, the freestyle skiers will leave for Pyeongchang from Japan where they are wrapping up their pre-Olympic training.

The Belarusian athletes will compete in such disciplines as biathlon, alpine skiing, figure skating, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, and short track speed skating. The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held from 9 to 25 February in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Belarus' flag-raising ceremony is scheduled to take place in the Olympic village at 15:00 local time (9:00 Minsk time) on 7 February.

Over the history of participation in Winter Olympics, Team Belarus has won eight medals in biathlon, six in freestyle skiing, and one in figure skating.

In 1994-2014, the Belarusian Olympians won 15 medals: 6 golden, 4 silver, and 5 bronze ones.
