France win its second FIFA World Cup trophy

MINSK, 16 July (BelTA) - France defeated Croatia 4-2 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup final match to grab its second World Cup trophy. France's first victory in the FIFA World Cup took place in 1998 with the championship held in France, BelTA informs.

The final match was played at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on 15 July with almost 80,000 fans in attendance.

The opening goal was performed by Croatia's Mario Manszukic into own net on the 18th minute. Ivan Persic equalized on the 28th minute. Other goals were scored by France's Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe, and Croatia's Mario Mandzukic.

France's victory meant Didier Deschamps, who captained them 20 years ago, became just the third man to win the competition as a player and coach. Croatia's silver became the country's best ever achievement at the FIFA World Cup. Bronze went to Belgium who beat England 2-0.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will take place in Qatar.
