GRODNO, 17 June (BelTA) – President of the European Athletics Association Svein Arne Hansen will visit Grodno to assess it as a likely candidate to host major international tournaments, BelTA learned from Oleg Andreichik, the head of the sports and tourism department at the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee.

President of the European Athletics Association Svein Arne Hansen will come to see Belarus' Athletics Championship which will be held in Grodno on 23-25 June. The main goal of the visit is to get familiar with the infrastructure of the city. After all, the Grodno has applied to host several international athletics top tournaments.

“We are set to compete for the right to host the European Cross Country Championships, European combined events cup and also European junior championships. The guest will assess not only the sports infrastructure but also accommodation and catering capacities and in general the city's potential as a possible host of a major tournament,” Oleg Andreichik noted. He stressed that Grodno has one of the country's best facilities for training and competitions in athletics, and has accumulated rich experience in hosting tournaments. The city has recently been the host of the national athletics championships.

“Our tournament has been included in the calendar of the International Federation of Athletics, which speaks of its high status. This year's Belarusian championships is important because the country's national athletics team for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be formed after it,” Oleg Andreichik said.
