Dinamo Minsk end KHL regular season with narrow defeat to Ak Bars

MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – HC Dinamo Minsk ended the KHL regular season with a narrow defeat to Ak Bars, 3-4, and now the team will be getting ready to face Lokomotiv in the Gagarin Cup quarterfinal, BelTA has learned.

Atte Ohtamaa's goal gave Ak Bars the early lead, and it was not until the 37th minute that Aaron Palushaj tied the score.

In the final stanza Alexander Svitov and Mikhail Varnakov scored two goals within 30 seconds to provide Ak Bars with a two-goal cushion, 3-1. Sergei Kostitsyn soon reduced the deficit and Fredrik Pettersson tied it up once again in the final minutes. Andrei Popov's goal with a couple of minutes left gave Ak Bars the win.

With 105 points after 60 games Dinamo Minsk finished the regular season 5th in the Western Conference. In the first round of the Gagarin Cup the Bisons will take on Lokomotiv Yaroslavl that finished the regular season 4th. The first two matches will be held in Yaroslavl on 21 and 23 February. Two more will be held at Minsk Arena on 25 and 27 February. If more games are needed, they will be held in Yaroslavl on 1 March, in Minsk on 3 March and again in Yaroslavl on 5 March. Dinamo Minsk and Lokomotiv played in the Gagarin Cup first round in 2011. The Bisons lost the round 3-4 then. The Belarusian team also advanced to the Gagarin Cup playoffs in 2012 and 2015.

CSKA Moscow will take on Jokerit Helsinki, SKA St Petersburg will face Vityaz Podolsk, while Dynamo Moscow will play Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod.

In the Eastern Conference Metallurg Magnitogorsk will go vs Kunlun Red Star, Avangard Omsk vs Admiral Vladivostok, Ak Bars Kazan vs Salavat Yulayev Ufa, and Traktor Chelyabinsk vs Barys Astana.
