Davis Cup: Ivashko loses Belarus vs Romania opener

MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) - Ilya Ivashko (ranked 175th in the world) lost 2-6, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6 to Adrian Ungur (No.313) in the opening rubber of Belarus' Davis Cup first-round tie against Romania in Minsk on 3 February, BelTA has learned.

Friday's second singles rubber will be between Yegor Gerasimov (No.341) and Marius Copil (No.129).

Max Mirnyi (world's No.25, doubles) and Yegor Gerasimov will contest Saturday's doubles rubber (4 February) against Horia Tecau (No.18 in the ATP doubles rankings) and Nicolae Frunza (No.524).

Two more singles rubbers are scheduled for Sunday, 5 February: Ivashko vs Copil, Gerasimov vs Ungur.

Under the Davis Cup rules, team captains Vladimir Volchkov and Andrei Pavel may introduce substitutions after the first matchday.

Belarus and Romania previously met on the Davis Cup court in 2005, with Romania celebrating a 3-2 win. Now, Belarus is ranked 38th in the Davis Cup team overall standings, Romania is 31st.

The winner of the Belarus vs Romania tie will face Austria in the second round in September.
