CAS to issue ruling on suspension of Belarus canoe and kayak team in 2-3 weeks

MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) – The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will issue its ruling on the suspension of the Belarusian men's canoe and kayak national team from the 2016 Rio Games by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) in a 2-3 weeks' time, BelTA learned from Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee Anatoly Kotov.

“During the hearings our Swiss lawyers presented a well-reasoned position. The arguments voiced by the lawyers of the International Canoe Federation seemed to be unconvincing. They did not provide evidence to prove the Belarusian athletes guilty. They made several personal remarks, citing the similar decision of the International Paralympic Committee to ban the Russian national team. In my opinion, the court in Lausanne was not convinced by the prosecution. In court, the Belarusian side made sure again that all the ICF accusations against the men's canoe and kayak are far-fetched. The CAS will publish its final ruling on the case on its official website in the next 2 to 3 weeks,” Anatoly Kotov said.

BelTA reported earlier that Belarus' Senior Men's Canoe and Kayak National Team was preparing for the Rio Olympics in France when they had a surprise visit and a search by police. The ICF accused Belarus team of the use of banned substances and imposed a one-year ban. Thus the team was not able to participate in the 2016 Summer Games. Belarus applied to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. The CAS refused to fast-track the proceedings. The hearing was held in Switzerland on 7 November.
