Brest to open winter athletics season with international tournament

BREST, 29 November (BelTA) – The 59th International Athletics Tournament to honor the memory of Hero of the Soviet Union Lieutenant General Dmitry Karbyshev will take place in Brest on 1-3 December, BelTA learned from leading specialist for the Olympic movement development at the Brest Office of the National Olympic Committee Irina Alshova.

Partaking in the competitions will be more than 300 young athletes from Belarus, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and Moldova. Competitions will be held in two age groups: 13-14 and 15-16 years old.

The tournament will feature 60m, 300m, 600m, 1km and 2km running events, 3km and 5km speed walking, shot-put, long and high jump, pole vaulting, and triple jump, discus, hammer and javelin throwing. Attending the competitions will be reining European champion and finalist of the 2016 Rio Olympics javelin thrower Tatyana Kholodovich.

The tournament will include 64 medal events. Best athletes and coaches will receive special awards.

The 59th edition of the tournament was organized by the Belarusian Athletics Federation, Brest City Hall and the Brest Oblast Executive Committee, and the Brest Office of the Belarusian National Olympic Committee.
