Brest to host first Anatoly Karpov Chess Cup

MINSK, 11 October (BelTA) – Brest will host the First Cup of the 12th World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov, BelTA learned from Anastasia Sorokina, Chairperson of the Belarusian Chess Federation and Vice President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

When asked about the plans of top chess players to visit Belarus, Anastasia Sorokina noted that this work is underway. “The first Anatoly Karpov Cup will take place in Brest on 2-4 November. This tournament has been made possible due to the active work of our regional departments. The organizers of the Black Pawn Chess Festival in Brest have nursed this idea for a long time. I managed to discuss the tournament at the Mikhail Tal Memorial in Moscow, Anatoly Karpov is also planning to visit Brest in November,” Anastasia Sorokina said.

The chairperson of the Belarusian Chess Federation noted that Belarus is considering hosting the FIDE Congress in 2019 in the context of the development of international cooperation. “The World Chess Federation trusts Belarus to host important tournaments. Minsk is becoming a large venue for negotiations and adoption of decisions that will influence the development of this sport all over the world,” Anastasia Sorokina stressed.

Minsk will host the 45th World Chess Olympiad in 2022. The preparation has already started. Belarus plans to field three teams at this domestic tournament.
