Belarusian Sergei Ilyich among new CAS members

MINSK, 24 January (BelTA) - The International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS), the governing body of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), has appointed 24 new arbitrators and 2 new mediators, among whom is Belarusian Sergei Ilyich, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Olympic Committee.

Effective 1 January 2017, the new members can be nominated to serve as arbitrator or mediator in CAS arbitrations or mediations. Sergei Ilyich has become the third Belarusian arbiter, who has recently been included into the CAS through active actions of the National Olympic Committee. Sergei Ilyich will join Alexander Danilevich and Timur Sysuyev who are already serving on the sports court,” Belarus' NOC Secretary General Anatoly Kotov said.

The CAS was created in 1984 to provide dispute resolution services to the sports world. For over 30 years, it has settled disputes involving athletes, coaches, federations, sponsors, agents, clubs, leagues and organizers of sports events from almost every country in the world through arbitration and mediation procedures. In 2016, the CAS registered over 600 arbitration procedures and 10 mediations.

Because of the growing number of annual proceedings and in view of the need for the constant staff rotation, the ICAS regularly reviews and complements the lists of arbitrators and mediators, focusing on geographic spread as well as on gender and knowledge of the world of sports in order to achieve a balanced list of independent legal specialists equipped to meet the unique challenges of global sports arbitration and mediation.
