Belarus wins 15 medals at European Youth Olympic Festival

MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes won 15 medals at the 14th European Youth Summer Olympic Festival which was held in Gyor, Hungary. Belarus clinched three gold, five silver and seven bronze medals, which is the best result for Belarus in these competitions, BelTA has learned.

Gold medals were claimed by Viktoriya Novikova (judo, 70kg), Anastasia Shkurdai (swimming, 100m butterfly), Vladislav Shakhnitsky and Anastasia Zhuk (Mixed C2-500m).

Silver medals were collected by Sergei Dembitsky (athletics, triple jump), Artur Moskalenko (athletics, hammer throwing), Svyatoslav Dranitsky (artistic gymnastics, vaulting), Anastasia Shkurdai (swimming, 100m backstroke), women's volleyball team (Yulia Minyuk, Alina Egorova, Tatyana Kholod, Anna Grishkevich, Anna Knyazeva, Yulia Kislyuk, Yelizaveta Shuplyak, Agata Beksha, Yelizaveta Manchak, Violetta Belyavskaya, Valeryia Moisiyuk, Vera Kostyuchik).

Bronze medals went to Vladislav Shakhnitsky and Anastasia Zhuk (Mixed C2-200m), Roman Gmyrak (athletics, javelin throwing), Anastasia Zhuk (C1-500m), Karina Yeginyan (athletics, shot putting), Glafira Bakhur (judo, 44kg), Vladislav Dzvonik (judo, 50kg), the mixed C4 (Anna Pashchenko, Irina Shkred, Maksim Khutsky, Ilya Kozlovsky).

In 2005 Belarus won 11 (4, 5, 2) medals in Lignano, Italy. Belarusian athletes first took part in the European Youth Olympic Festival in 1993.

Belarus placed 12th in the overall standings. The medal table was topped by Russia with 61 (30 gold, 19 silver, 12 bronze) medals. Italy placed second with 38 (14,11, 13) medals. Third went Hungary with 41 (13, 14, 14). Representatives of 38 out of 50 countries grace the podium in Gyor.

Belarus fielded 96 athletes to compete in basketball, cycling, volleyball, artistic gymnastics, rowing, athletics, swimming, tennis.

The 2019 European Youth Summer Olympic Festival is scheduled for Baku, Azerbaijan, with the winter edition due in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
