Belarus U21 team claim EuroHockey Junior Indoor Championships silver

MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) – Belarus U21 women's team clinched silver of the EuroHockey Junior Indoor Championships in Vienna on 22 January, BelTA has learned.

On the final day Belarus faced the Czech Republic to finish 1-1 in regulation. The tight battle needed a shootout to decide the winner.

The opening goal came from Belarus as Yevgeniya Filippovich made it 1-0 in the 9th minute. As soon as the game resumed after a break Natalie Novakova sent home an equalizer, 1-1.

The Czech team were luckier in the shootout and lifted the Cup for the first time in 20 years.

In the qualifying round Belarus whitewashed Poland 3-0, routed Austria 6-1 and drew with Switzerland 2-2. In the semifinal Belarus defeated Russia 11-2.

Russia finished third in Vienna after claiming a shootout victory over Switzerland, 2-1.

A week earlier, Belarus U21 team finished fourth in the men's event.
