Belarus to play in 2019 IIHF World Championship Division I

MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – Belarus will play in the 2019 IIHF World Championship Division I Group A in Kazakhstan. The decision was announced at the 2018 IIHF Annual Congress in Copenhagen on 18 May, BelTA has learned.

The tournament will take place at Barys Arena in Astana from 29 April to 5 May 2019. The teams playing for promotion will be Kazakhstan, Belarus, Slovenia, Hungary, South Korea and Lithuania. The top-two teams of the event will be promoted to the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Switzerland.

Belarus relegated to Division I following a poor performance at the 2018 IIHF World Championship in Denmark where the team suffered seven losses. The last time the Belarusian national team played in Division I was in 2004.
