MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) – Belarus and Latvia will work out a convenient train timetable for fans of the 2021 IIHF World Championship. The matter was discussed at a meeting between CEO of Latvijas Dzelzcels (Latvian Railways, LDz) Maris Kleinbergs and head of Belarusian Railways Vladimir Morozov, BelTA learned from the LDz press service.
“Taking into account that in spring 2021 Riga and Minsk will be co-hosting the IIHF World Championship, LDz and Belarusian Railways will cooperate to secure convenient transport connection between the capitals of the two states. A special train schedule will be developed for this purpose. The work on it will be continued during the development of the train timetable for 2020-2021,” the press service said.
In January-September 2019, some 15,500 passengers traveled between Minsk and Riga, which is up 15.3% year-on-year. The heads of the two railway companies agreed to promote further increase in passenger flows, including for making rail transportation more competitive and convenient. “This can be achieved through closer cooperation with travel agencies and developing proposals for combined transport tickets so that tourists could plan their trips in advance and purchase all necessary travel documents,” LDz said. There are also plans to search for solutions to make rail journeys between Minsk and Riga faster.
The Latvian and Belarusian railway companies agreed to attract new types of cargo and develop additional logistics proposals and a competitive tariff policy.
In January-September 2019, a total of 18.4 million tonnes of cargo was transported between Belarus and Latvia, which is 83.2% to January-September 2018. Although there was a decline in the transportation of oil products, a considerable increase (up 34.6%) was registered in the transportation of wood products.
