Belarus into 2017 ITTF European Table Tennis Championships elite division

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) - The Belarusian men's table tennis team have clinched the right to play in the elite division of the 2017 ITTF European Table Tennis Championships, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusians lost 2-3 in the knockout-round second leg against Hungary. However, thanks to the away victory, 3-1, the Belarusian team will continue contention. Leader of the Belarusian team Vladimir Samsonov, who turned 41 on 17 April, took a confident victory in the opener against Adam Szudi 3-0 (11-6, 1-7, 11-3). Pavel Platonov proved stronger over Krisztian Nagy 3-1 (14-12, 10-12, 11-5, 11-2). The hosts needed just one more victory to claim the overall win. Hungary, however, managed to pull together and not only tie it up but secure the overall victory after Alexander Khanin lost to Nandor Ecseki 1-3 (13-11, 10-12, 12-14, 6-11), Gleb Shamruk fell to Krisztian Nagy 1-3 (11-13, 10-12, 11-8, 7-11), and Pavel Platonov lost 2-3 to Adam Szudi 2-3 (11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-13, 3-11) in the decider.

The Belarusian women's table tennis team advanced to the elite division of the 2017 ITTF European Table Tennis Championships after a confident win over Wales, 3-0, in Minsk. The tournament of 16 European top teams will take place in Luxembourg on 13-17 September.
