Belarus files complaint with ICF, hopes for amicable settlement

MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) – The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus has sent a letter of complaint to the International Canoe Federation and expects an amicable settlement of the dispute, NOC Secretary General Anatoly Kotov told BelTA.

“This week we have addressed the International Canoe Federation with a request for the compensation of all the expenses and moral damages. Now we are waiting for the response. The letter of complaint was sent on behalf of the Belarusian athletes and the Sports Ministry. The National Olympic Committee is the organizer of the process,” Anatoly Kotov said.

In his words, the International Canoe Federation is expected to provide an answer within the next few weeks. If the International Canoe Federation refuses to meet Belarus halfway, the country will apply to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. “Since the CAS upheld Belarus' appeal, we see our chances as good. Maybe, we will not get the full compensation we are claiming for, but still,” noted the secretary general.

According to Anatoly Kotov, the National Olympic Committee will seek compensation for the prize money the Belarusian team could have earned in case of victory and also the expenses spent on the four-year training of the team for the Olympics. This sum is estimated at $400,000-500,000.

“In the new Olympic period we will have to take into account the whole range of issues, including unfair practices used against certain countries and teams,” he stressed.

BelTA reported earlier that in January the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturned the one-year suspension imposed on Belarus' senior men's canoe and kayak teams by the ICF Executive Committee due to alleged multiple anti-doping rule violations.
