Belarus claims 12 medals at 2017 World Sambo Championships in Russia

MINSK, 14 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian national team won 12 medals at the 42nd edition of the World Sambo Championships which took place in Sochi, Russia, BelTA informs.

The champion titles went to Tatiana Matsko (64kg weight category) and Svetlana Timoshenko (80kg). Silver medals were collected by Anzhela Zhilinskaya (68kg), Yekaterina Prokopenko (60kg), Olga Namazova (72kg), Stepan Popov (74kg), and Evgeny Aleksiyevich (82kg). Bronze medals were won by Leila Abbasova (48kg), Marina Zharskaya (52kg), Alexander Koksha (68kg), Vae Tutkhalyan (62kg), and Timofei Yemelyanov (82kg).

Belarus ranked second in the overall team standings with seven (two gold, three silver, and two bronze) medals. Russia placed first with five gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Ukraine finished third with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

All in all, medals in Sochi were won by athletes from 27 countries. The 2018 World Sambo Championships will be hosted by Milan, Italy.
