MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – Belarusian truck racer Alexander Vasilevsky has climbed to 7th position in the 2017 Dakar Rally overall standings after Stage 8, BelTA learned from Belarusian mobile carrier velcom, a technical partner of the MAZ-SPORTavto team.
Alexander Vasilevsky, navigator Dmitry Vikhrenko and mechanic Anton Zaporoshchenko cleared the eighth leg of the rally between Salta and Uyuni in 2h4m37s and came in 10th. Martin van den Brink clocked the best time of 1h55m20s in the truck category on his Renault. Belarus' Sergei Vyazovich crossed the finishing line in 6th position, just five minutes off the stage winner. Alexei Vishnevsky faced some issues with the fuel injection system and finished the stage in 28th.
Alexander Vasilevsky now sits in 7th place in the overall standings losing 1h42m to the overall leader. Sergei Vyazovich is 16th, and Alexei Vishnevsky is 20th.
“We are satisfied with the results. Alexander Vasilevsky has secured a position in top ten, and now our objective is to keep it and, if possible, improve it. Unfortunately, the organizers cancel stages and reduce the timed sections. On the one hand, safety is above all. On the other, we have been preparing for serious challenges and spartan conditions. We will do our best to reduce the gap with the leaders,” Sergei Vyazovich said.
Stage 9 from Salta to Chilecito has been canceled for safety reasons. The heavy rains have already caused massive landslides, rock falls and flooding.More about Sport
