Belarus' 2016 IIHF World Championship playoff hopes end after loss to Hungary

MINSK, 16 May (BelTA) – A 2-5 defeat to Hungary ended Belarus' playoff hopes at the ongoing 2016 IIHF World Championship in Moscow and St Petersburg, BelTA has learned.

Hungary produced a two-goal lead early in the first period. Belarus answered with goals from Geoff Platt and Artur Gavrus. Hungary then fired three more, which went unanswered.

Hungary earned its first Worlds victory in 77 years.

Dave Lewis' men lost even theoretical chances for the 2016 IIHF World Championship playoffs. Belarus now should do its best to stay in the elite division. The last round-robin game against France scheduled for 17 May will be the key one for the Belarusian team.

Group B standings: 1. Finland – 15 points (5 games played), 2. Canada – 12 (4), 3. United States – 9 (5), 4. Germany – 7 (5), 5. Slovakia – 6 (4), 6. France – 5 (5), 7. Hungary – 3 (6), 8. Belarus – 3 (6).
