BATE Borisov defeats Dundalk in Champions League third qualifier firs leg

MINSK, 27 July (BelTA) – FC BATE Borisov won a home match 1-0 against FC Dundalk in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, BelTA has learned.

The opponents know each other well. A year ago they encountered each other in the qualification of the main continental tournament. Back then Alexander Yermakovich's men scored a home win 2-1 and an away draw 0-0. This time the hosted dominated the opening 25 minutes. Igor Stasevich and Vitaly Rodionov were the main danger men in the first half but they failed to convert their efforts into goals. BATE also controlled the opening stages of the second half and had two quick fire efforts on target from both Mirko Ivanic and Zhavnerchik. BATE showed their strength in depth when they introduced Alexander Hleb, for whom it was the 100th match in the European cup tournaments. Hleb's class combined with the skills of another substitute Mikhail Gordeychuk, gave the hosts a game-winning fresh impetus. With assistance from Alexander Hleb, Mikhail Gordeychuk finally was able to find the back of the net.

The return-leg match will be held in Dundalk on 4 August. The winner will advance to the Champions League playoff and guarantee Europa League group stage action. The loser will continue to play in the League Europe qualification.
