Azarenka one point up in WTA rankings

MINSK, 5 October (BelTA) – Belarus number one Victoria Azarenka has climbed one point up to place 22nd in the WTA rankings, BelTA informs.

Last week the Belarusian tennis player made a good start at the Wuhan Open in China. However, later she had to withdraw due to an injury. The injury turned to be a serious one and Victoria Azarenka decided to miss the rest of the season, pulling out of the tournaments in Beijing and Hong Kong. The Belarusian currently holds 2,276 points.

Fellow Belarusian Olga Govortsova also made one step up to the 67th place in the WTA with the total of 866 points.

Another Belarusian Alexandra Sasnovich made it into the WTA top 100, leaping from the 102nd to the 99 position with the total of 622 points. Her career best was 92nd position in the WTA last year.

The WTA rankings are topped by Serena Williams of the United States who also decided to take the rest of the year off to recover from injuries.

The top ten players, according to the current WTA rankings, are as follows:

1. Serena Williams (USA) - 11,285 points

2. Simona Halep (Romania) – 6,670

3. Maria Sharapova (Russia) - 4,972

4. Petra Kvitova (the Czech Republic) - 3,851

5. Gabrine Muguruza (Spain) – 3,691

6. Lucie Safarova (the Czech Republic) – 3,406

7. Flavia Pennetta (Italy) – 3,523

8. Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) – 3,225

9. Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic) – 3,220

10. Angelique Kerber (Germany) – 3,220.

Vladimir Ignatik holds the highest position (210th) with 238 points among Belarusian tennis players in the ATP rankings. Max Mirnyi is 34th in the ATP doubles rankings.
