MINSK, 8 May (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 98 Victoria Azarenka lost 2-6, 6-1, 5-7 to Czech world number six Karolina Pliskova at the Madrid Open 2018 round two, BelTA informs.
The Czech player eased to the first set only for former world number one Victoria Azarenka to respond by winning five straight games to take the second. Karolina Pliskova held her nerve before breaking serve to win the match. The game lasted for two hours eight minutes.
Karolina Pliskova will next face U.S. world number 9 Sloane Stephens.
On 8 May Belarus' world number 58 Aliaksandra Sasnovich will take on world number 29 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.
In the men's doubles event Belarus' Max Mirnyi and Kevin Anderson of South Africa will face the Austrian-Croatian duet of Alexander Peya and Nikola Mektic.
