Ananich: Sports journalism improves ratings of every newspaper, TV channel

MINSK, 9 February (BelTA) – Sports journalism improves the ratings of every newspaper and TV channel, Belarus' Information Minister Lilia Ananich said at the Media Olymp 2016 awards ceremony held at the National Olympic Committee on 8 February. The nationwide competition among sports journalists Media Olymp 2016 celebrated the best coverage of the activity of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus in the year of its 25th anniversary and also Belarus' participation in the 31st Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, BelTA has learned.

“Mass media representatives, when attending big sports events, are the ones who know how to convey the feelings and who take the pride, together with athletes, when the Belarusian flag is raised during an awards ceremony. A lot is done to improve the sports coverage in Belarus. Thanks to the efforts of the government, we now have Belarus Five, a sports TV channel. Sports journalism raises ratings of every newspaper and TV channel. Journalists from every part of our country have heroes to write about,” Lilia Ananich said.

Awards for the best coverage of Belarus' performance in the Rio Games 2016 went to Ruslan Vasilyev (Sportivnaya Panorama newspaper), Sergei Kanashits and Dmitry Komashko (SB. Belarus Segodnya newspaper), Artur Zhol and Andrei Vashkevich (Pressbol internet portal), Andrei Ivanov (Belarus Five TV channel), and Sergei Berkutov (First National Channel of the Belarusian Radio).

In 2016 the National Olympic Committee of Belarus marked its 25th anniversary. BelTA photo correspondent Gennady Zhinkov and BelTA journalist Alexander Novikov were honored for the best coverage of the NOC's 25th anniversary celebrations. BelTA photo journalist Andrei Pokumeiko was awarded for the coverage of Belarus' performance in the Rio Games 2016.

The nationwide competition among sports journalists Media Olymp 2016 was held by the National Olympic Committee in cooperation with the Belarusian Association of Sports Press on the initiative of the NOC Standing Committee on Mass Media.
