Aleksandra Sasnovich progresses to U.S. Open round two

MINSK, 29 August (BelTA) – Aleksandra Sasnovich of Belarus went off to a good start at the U.S. Open in New York, the final Grand Slam event of the year, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian world number 88 grabbed a confident 6-2, 6-2 win over Julia Boserup of the United States (World No.115) in the opener. Aleksandra Sasnovich will next play Australia's world number 43 Ashleigh Barty who saw off world number 23 Ana Konjuh of Croatia 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round.

Former world number one Maria Sharapova of Russia, currently ranked 146 in the world, made a dramatic return to the Grand Slam action by knocking out world number two Simona Halep of Romania 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Poland's Marcin Matkowski will open the men's doubles event against the U.S. duo of Taylor Fritz and Reilly Opelka. Andrei Vasilevsky of Belarus and Chile's Hans Podlipnik Castillo will take on the Italian-French tandem of Andreas Seppi and Adrian Mannarino.
