Youth for Peace law competition in Minsk to feature representatives of seven countries

MINSK, 7 September (BelTA) – Representatives of seven countries will take part in the 12th edition of the international law competition Youth for Peace due in Minsk on 25-29 September, BelTA learned from MITSO University.

The event will feature teams from the UK, Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus. Competing will be 11 teams of law students from major universities of these countries,” MITSO University informed. Among the participants are the students of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University (Yerevan, Armenia), the BPP University (London, United Kingdom), Moldova State Institute of International Relations (Chisinau), Higher School of Economics (Moscow, Russia), National University “Odessa Academy of Law” (Ukraine).

The jury panel will include Olivier Ribbelink, Senior Researcher at the T.M.C. Asser Instituut, member of the ILA Space Law committee (the Netherlands); Michael J. Strauss, Professor at the Paris Center for Diplomatic and Strategic Studies (CEDS); Lionel Blackman, chairman of the Solicitors' International Human Rights Group (SIHRG), Visiting Fellow at London South Bank University in Criminal Litigation; Paulino Pardo, Professor at the University of Leon (Spain); Yelena Dovgan, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and International Relations at MITSO University, member of the ILA's Use of Force Committee.

The competition is unmatched in Eastern Europe and the CIS. "It is one of the three prestigious European international law competitions. It provides an opportunity for students to enrich and extend their knowledge in international humanitarian law, international public law and human rights law through participation in a simulated armed conflict. The competition aims to spread the ideas of tolerance and intercultural dialogue among young people and demonstrate the importance of peaceful coexistence of nations. The project debuted in 2006. Over the eleven years the project has brought together the law students from more than 40 countries such as the UK, Sweden, France, Cuba, India, the Netherlands, China, Moldova, Russia, Armenia, Germany, Belarus, Macedonia and other countries. The competition was included in the list of the prestigious international law competitions by the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2015.

The international law competition Youth for Peace is held within the framework of the Academic Impact, the UN global initiative, which aligns institutions of higher education with the United Nations for the purpose of active supporting ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, literacy, sustainability and conflict resolution.
