World Bank to allocate $1.9m for population census in Belarus

MINSK, 20 August (BelTA) – The World Bank plans to allocate $1.9 million to conduct population census in Belarus, Chairwoman of the National Statistics Committee of Belarus Inna Medvedeva told the media on 20 August, BelTA has learned.

During the trial census in Molodechno District a third of the population expressed their willingness to participate in the population census in 2019 online. The World Bank made a proposal of a grant to help organize the online census. “The document on a grant is pending signing. The grant of $1.9 million will be used develop the software product and purchase tablets,” Inna Medvedeva said.

The Belarusian National Statistics Committee expects to get financial support from UNFPA at the end of this year. The funds will used to improve public awareness and prepare for the processing of census data.

“I also continue talking over sponsor support to the organizations that are ready to buy tablets for us. There are certain agreements. Most likely, the equipment will be purchased for the Education Ministry and Healthcare Ministry which show active informatization. We will use these tablets free of charge only during the population census,” said Inna Medvedeva.
