Vitebsk Mayor: By telling the truth about war, veterans help us preserve peace

VITEBSK, 5 May (BelTA) – Vitebsk Mayor Viktor Nikolaikin stressed the invaluable role of veterans in preserving peace during a reception for Great Patriotic War veterans at Vitebsk City Hall, BelTA has learned.

Twenty participants of the Great Patriotic War, victims of the Leningrad Siege, concentration camp prisoners, and active members of the veteran movement were the guests of honor at the event. “You have survived that hell and came out victorious. It is thanks to you that we live under a peaceful sky and know what a war means. I ask you to tell the young about what you went through, and then no one will be able to rewrite the history,” Viktor Nikolaikin said.

The Mayor also spoke of the feat of the workers of the rear who worked day and night to ensure that civilians and defenders of the fatherland would be supplied with everything necessary. Former prisoners of war, Leningrad siege survivors had to go through a lot. Viktor Nikolaikin once again thanked everyone for their courage, for prevailing and for rebuilding the country after the war.

“I remember the liberators of Vitebsk telling us how they came to the railway station and saw that everything was in ruins, with some skeletons of buildings surviving. But the city was rebuilt. This is an example for all of us: we just need to work hard and we will succeed,” Viktor Nikolaikin said. On behalf of the authorities he promised to continue to do whatever is necessary for the veterans to live comfortable and for the country to live in peace.
