Union State to finance comprehensive medical care for 800 Chernobyl victims in 2016

ZHODINO, 28 June (BelTA) – More than 800 people affected by the Chernobyl nuclear accident will get comprehensive medical care financed from the budget of the Belarus-Russia Union State in 2016. The matter was discussed at a meeting of the commission for the environment, management of natural resources and emergency recovery of the Union State Parliamentary Assembly on 28 June, BelTA has learned.

Up to RUB180 million from the 2016 Union State budget has been allocated to provide comprehensive medical care to some categories of Belarusian and Russian nationals exposed to radiation as a result of the Chernobyl disaster.

The comprehensive medical care will be available from three institutions, including the Nikiforov Center of Emergency and Radiation Medicine of the Russian Emergencies Ministry in Saint Petersburg, the Tsyba Medical Radiological Research Center in Obninsk, which is a subsidiary of the Gertsen Federal Medical Research Center of the Russian Healthcare Ministry, and the Research Center for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology in Gomel. The public clients in the healthcare project are the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Healthcare Ministries of Belarus and Russia.

On 28 June, the Union State MPs voted in favor of the initiative to provide such medical assistance annually.
