UNFPA to allocate nearly $1m to Belarus ahead of 2019 population census

MINSK, 16 October (BelTA) - The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) will allocate nearly $1 million on the preparations for the population census 2019 in Belarus, Inna Medvedeva, the head of the Belarusian National Statistics Committee, told a press conference, BelTA has learned.

“With regard to the assistance from international organizations ahead of the Belarus census 2019, I can say that the sums are not small. We closely work with the World Bank. We recently received a letter where the World Bank states its willingness to help us in the matters of the use of the internet in the future population census. We have a very good project with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) with the budget of $1 million. We started to work with FAO. On 30 October we will host an expert and discuss the preparation of a questionnaire to collect agricultural data,” Inna Medvedeva said.

She added that the work continues with the Belarusian organizations who provide assistance in the acquisition of tablet computers for the upcoming population census in Belarus.

With regard to the costs of the pilot census, they were minimized, Inna Medvedeva said. No third-party personnel was involved. The pilot census was conducted by the employees of the state statistics bodies (all in all, 40 people were involved).

The pilot census was held in Molodechno District, Minsk Oblast from 2 to 13 October. It was an important preparatory stage ahead of the Belarus census 2019.
