Unemployment level in Belarus fits Europe's average jobless rate

MINSK, 20 August (BelTA) – The level of unemployment in Belarus corresponds to the average European jobless rate, Chairwoman of the National Statistics Committee of Belarus Inna Medvedeva told the media on 20 August, BelTA has learned.

Studying the level of employment in the country, the Belarusian National Statistics Committee conducts a survey that provides data on the actual unemployment rate and labor migrants. This data is provided according to the area of activity. “I can say that there is a gradual decline in the actual unemployment rate. If this indicator was 5.8% in 2016, it was already 5.6% in 2017. In the second quarter of 2018 actual unemployment made up 4.7%. These are 239,100 people. This threshold is not critical, as many of our neighbors have similar indicators,” said Inna Medvedeva.

She cited Russia (the unemployment rate is at 4.8%), Germany (4.4%), and Ukraine (9.5%). “Our level is typical to almost entire old Europe. I do not take into account Lithuania and Latvia, where the unemployment rate is higher. This data corresponds to international standards used by the World Bank and the International Labor Organization in assessing the unemployment rate in Belarus,” Inna Medvedeva added.

She mentioned the downward tendency for actual, officially recorded and hidden unemployment. “The figures have been significantly reducing for the second year in row,” the head of the National Statistics Committee said.
