UN Climate Change Conference kicks off in Madrid

MINSK, 2 December (BelTA) – The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 25) started in Madrid, Spain on 2 December, Euronews reports.

Opening the conference, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called upon the world powers to fulfill the promise given at the Paris Summit, which is to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, and reach carbon neutrality by 2050. “We simply have to stop digging and drilling and take advantage of the vast possibilities offered by renewable energy and nature-based solutions,” the UN head stressed. Other top contributors to the climate change, along with mining industry, are agriculture, transport, inefficient urban planning, construction, cement and steel production and many other sectors and factors, he said.

The conference has brought together about 20,000 people. These are both environmentalists and heads of state and government. Seminars and discussions will be led by scientists, politicians and public figures. The slogan of the conference is Time for Action. The UN Climate Change Conference will last through 13 December.
