Two Minsk school students to represent Belarus at Chinese language competition in Beijing

MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) – Two school students from Minsk will go to Beijing in September for the final of the 2017 Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition following the national qualifications, BelTA learned from the Chinese Embassy in Minsk.

The qualifying round was organized jointly with the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), the education department of the Chinese Embassy in Belarus and Minsk Gymnasium No.23 in cooperation with the Union of Chinese Students in Belarus. Attending the qualifications was Charge d'Affaires of China to Belarus Luo Zhanhui, Second Secretary for Education Affairs at the Chinese embassy Li Wenhua, representatives of the Education Ministry of Belarus, Belarusian schools and gymnasia, four Confucius institutes and classes in Minsk, and also Chinese students of the Belarusian universities.

Li Wenhua expressed gratitude to Minsk Gymnasium No.23 for the work done for hosting the national qualifications for the Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students within the past five years.

The contest featured 21 school students from different regions of Belarus and also students of the Institute for Chinese Studies at the Belarusian State university and the Confucius Institute at the Minsk State Linguistic University.

The competition consisted of three parts: Part 1 included both questions on knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, syntax of the Chinese language, and questions about China's political system, economy, culture, geographical location. Part 2 (oral presentation): Participants were invited to introduce themselves and then tell their story about the relationship with the Chinese language. Part 3 was a Chinese cultural talent show. Contestants were invited to demonstrate a Chinese culture skill: sing a Chinese song, perform a Chinese dance, do paper-cutting or Chinese calligraphy, recite Chines poems, play a Chinese music instrument, etc.

The first prize went to Lidiya Andryushenkova, a student of the Confucius Institute at the Minsk State Linguistic University. Student of Minsk gymnasium No. 23 Elizaveta Gorunovich and student of Minsk gymnasium No. 12 Dmitry Klimyonok shared the second place. Ulyana Koyda from Orsha gymnasium No. 2, Anna Shevtsova from Minsk gymnasium No. 12, and Violetta Sidorenko from Minsk gymnasium No. 33 were awarded the third-place diplomas.

Lidiya Andryushenkova and Elizaveta Gorunovich made it through to the finals of the 10th Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition that will take place in September. Five participants were also awarded diplomas and prizes.

Luo Zhanhui congratulated the attendees on the success of the competition, thanked the participants and wished them to keep studying Chinese in the same diligent way. This language can help achieve bigger success in exploring Chinese culture and contribute to the promotion of the Belarus-China cooperation. Luo Zhanhui pointed out that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Belarus-China diplomatic relations. Belarus-China cooperation in various fields is constantly expanding which provides a good opportunity to promote mutual understanding between Belarusian and Chinese students.
