Tropical Aussie city of Darwin shivers through coldest April day in 50 years

CANBERRA, 12 April (BelTA - Xinhua) - The tropical northern Australian city of Darwin has shivered through its coldest April day since 1968, with the mercury hitting just 18 degrees Celsius at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

In what has been described as a "remarkable" weather pattern, cold rain contributed to the low temperature, while the "feels-like" temperature was just 14.6 degrees Celsius at 6:00 p.m..

The average top temperature in April for the tropical city is almost double the 18 degrees mark at 32.7 degrees Celsius, meaning residents were forced to rug up and throw on "ugg boots" - popular, wool-lined boots - to deal with the chilly and unseasonable conditions.

Darwin's coldest ever temperature was recorded in July 1942, when the temperature reached just 10.4 degrees Celsius.
