Transit cargo aircraft lands radioactive freight in Gomel airport

MINSK, 20 March (BelTA) – A cargo aircraft in transit from Armenia to Bulgaria landed in Gomel. Radioactive emission of the cargo exceeded the standard background radiation by 250 times, BelTA learned from Oleg Lyashuk, Head of the Border Control Office of the State Border Committee of Belarus.

According to the source, the aircraft in transit from Armenia to Bulgaria arrived in Gomel at 12:30 on 19 March. A box inside the aircraft had markings of a source of ionizing radiation. Hazmat personnel sent by the border service and the Gomel Oblast Department of the Emergencies Ministry were called for. After examination the cargo was allowed to cross the Belarusian state border. According to the representative of the State Border Committee of Belarus, the cargo's radioactive emission exceeded the background radiation by 250 times.
