Torrential rains claim one life in north central Bulgaria

Sofia, July 24 (BelTA - BTA) - A state of emergency has been declared in Teteven Municipality (North Central Bulgaria) due to torrential rains, which have claimed one life, the Bulgarian National Radio reported Tuesday.

A 36-year-old man died in an accident under Cherven Peak near Teteven, the regional directorate of the Interior Ministry in Lovech confirmed for BTA. He was swept away by rushing water while walking from a guest house towards the city.

According to meteorological data, 99 l/sq m fell in the area.

The heavy rains affected the villages of Glogovo and Gradezhnitsa the most, flooding houses, disrupting communications and destroying bridges.

Three quarters with some 300 residents have been cut off.

Loukovit Mayor Ivan Gruncharov said that more than 20 houses in the village of Toros have been flooded.
