Southern California beaches remain closed after shark sightings

LOS ANGELES, 23 May (BelTA - Xinhua) - Beaches in Southern California, the United States, remain closed Monday after 25 sharks were spotted near the shore.

San Clemente's, southernmost beaches in Orange County, were closed Sunday morning after 25 white sharks within 25 yards off the coastline were observed from air by a Sheriff's helicopter. The beaches briefly reopened Monday morning, but closed again after a fisherman hooked a 12-foot shark off the pier.

A 12-footer and a 10-footer were spotted by multiple sources by the end and middle of the pier Monday morning. Around noon, about 20 sharks were counted by officers on the Orange County Sheriff's helicopter, prompting lifeguards to extend the closure through Monday, according to local media The Orange County Register.

Sunday's sightings were the most sharks spotted in the area so far.

There have been increasing shark activities near coastline in Southern California in recent months. San Clemente's beaches were closed in April after a 35-year-old woman was bitten by a shark in the thigh at nearby San Onofre beach. Earlier this month, 15 sharks were spotted in the water near the beaches.
